Display subtitle
To display subtitle for non-DVD content, you need to have VSFilter (also called DirectVobSub) installed.
Whenever a media file has associated subtitle files, VSFilter will load the subtitle text and generates a synchronized subtitle overlay on top of the video. The position and appearance of the subtitle can be adjusted from VSFilter's property pages. In some cases the position of the subtitle ends up outsize of the video, and becomes invisible, so make sure you have set the subtitle position correctly if you ever change the default.
Because subtitle files are files separate from the video file, this method only works for files on the local PC. Video files served from a UPnP server won't have subtitle files displayed.
Some file formats such as MKV and OGM have embedded subtitles. They don't have the local file restriction mentioned above.
When multiple subtitles are present, you can use the SUBTITLE remote button, or alt-S to switch between different subtitle track, or turn off subtitle. The current subtitle name is displayed to the upper right corner of the screen.
